Shakram Dance Company curates a selection of short Irish contemporary dance films alongside the premiere of their new work ‘Stone and Form’. In recent times, Ireland has seen a rapid growth in the genre of short dance film/choreography for camera. MotionCapture presents a selection of this new wave of work. Movement and camera inter-relate in a dialogical exchange redefining and challenging our perception of both dance and film.

Firkin Crane – Blank Canvas
‘Living layers of surface residue contained in stone and form’
Shakram Dance Company have recently re-located to Cork. They began their new venture participating in the Blank Canvas residency in the Firkin Crane. Shakram worked with four dancers in a period of research and development for the creation of a new site-specific dance film. The process involved the exploration of experimental filming techniques and the aesthetic of moulding movement into architecture, specifically within confined spaces. Shakram received an Arts Council bursary to fund this research period. An informal sharing of the work was presented at Friday 4th Sept. Thanks to the Firkin Crane for this opportunity.
Frozen
Shakram’s film
Frozen, described as a highlight of 2008 by Michael Seaver in the Irish Times
yearly review was recently screened at the Lighthouse Cinema as part of Dublin
Dance Festival’s Dance on Film series.
Irish World Academy of Music and Dance
Mairead Vaughan
and Dara O’Brien are working with students of the BA in Voice and Dance at the
Irish World Academy of Music and Dance in 2009/2010. They are teaching Indian
classical forms of dance and voice and interpreting them through a creative and
exploratory process. This will culminate in the creation of live performances performed in the Academy in 2010.
Being Nowhere Else, Frozen and Two Worlds Lie At Their Feet
2008 was a year of new creative ventures for Shakram. Mairead researched the area of dance improvisation and assimilated information she gained by attended ethnic dance workshops in Borneo, Malaysia, Peru and Ecuador over the previous two years. Dara entered into the world of live laptop, combining sounds he recorded in the rainforests of Amazonia and Borneo with the endless creative possibilities of the computer. Dance Ireland’s Choreographic Initiative and the International Dance Festival was the platform for this new work. We also worked collaboratively in the area of drama with independent artist Regan O'Brien and screened our film 'Frozen' in the Project Arts Centre, Dublin.
