Shakram Dance Company Profile


Mairead Vaughan (choreographer) and Dara O’Brien (composer) co-founded Shakram Dance Company in 1999. Shakram is a unique and vibrant Irish contemporary dance company with a commitment to presenting cutting edge, collaborative and innovative work. They have an eclectic history working with live music, interactive sound, film, theatre and site-specific performances.

Shakram have a distinctive aesthetic, informed by ethnic styles in music and dance, particularly Indian classical forms. Dara and Mairead have traveled and studied in India, Ecuador, Peru, Borneo, Malaysia and above the Arctic circle. Through incorporating elements of this experience into their art they wish to honour the richness of human diversity and hope to reduce the gap between other cultures and ourselves. Their distinctive style pursues an emotive and psychological response through a rich and layered aesthetic of pure movement.

Shakram have created over ten productions. They have toured extensively throughout Ireland and have performed at various festivals including the Dublin Fringe Festival, the International Dance Festival, Skibereen Arts Festival, Drogheda Arts Festival, Earthquake Dance Festival and the Ilios Festival, Harstaad, Norway. Shakram have presented their work predominantly in Project Arts Centre, Dublin, 2002, 03, 04, 05, 07, 08.

Mairead Vaughan is a choreographer, dancer and teacher. She graduated from Northern School of Contemporary Dance, Leeds, with a degree in Performing Arts (Dance) and from the University of Limerick with an MA in Contemporary Dance Performance (first class). Mairead is currently lecturer in dance and choreography on the BA in Voice and Dance and the MA in Contemporary Dance Performance at the Irish Academy of World Music and Dance, Limerick.
